How to prepare for moving from abroad to the Czech Republic

Moving from another country to the Czech Republic is an exciting but complex process that requires careful planning and preparation. Whether you’re relocating for work, studies, or personal reasons, understanding the logistics and potential challenges can make your transition smoother. Here’s a detailed guide to help you prepare for your move and avoid common mistakes however it is always better to hire professionals to help you with that.

Depending on your nationality and the purpose of your stay, you may need a visa to enter and reside in the Czech Republic. Also gather all necessary documents, such as proof of employment, financial statements, health insurance or any other formalities which you might need there.

Be aware that visa and gathering all documents might take several weeks or even months! Plan everything in advance.

Certain documents, such as birth certificates, marriage certificates, or educational diplomas, may need to be legalized in your home country before they are recognized in the Czech Republic. Also any official documents which are not in Czech should be translated by a certified translator. This is especially important for legal documents, contracts, and educational records.

3. Housing and accommodation

Start your housing search early. Decide whether you want to rent or buy a property. Websites like Sreality.cz, Bezrealitky.cz, and other expat forums can help you find your dream home abroad. If you’re unable to secure long-term housing before your arrival, arrange your temporary accommodation, such as a hotel or Airbnb for the first few weeks.

In searching your preferred place, consider factors such as proximity to work or school, public transportation access or shops and stores near by.

If you find your ideal place, ensure you understand the terms of your lease, including the length of the contract, deposit requirements, and responsibilities for utilities. If you’re unfamiliar with the Czech language, consider having the lease reviewed by a legal expert, translator or Czech native.

4. Secure your finances and health

Before moving, research health insurance options available in the Czech Republic. EU citizens may use their European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) temporarily, but long-term residents will need to enroll in the Czech public health insurance system or purchase private health insurance.

Second, open a Czech Bank account to manage your finances efficiently. It will make it easier to pay for rent, utilities, and other expenses. Popular banks include ČSOB, Česká spořitelna, Komerční banka, Raiffeisenbank etc.
